Clannad: Truly slice of life

Clannad is a Japanese visual novel which was then animated into two seasons with a whooping MAL rating of 8.3 and steam rating 10/10.It is centered around various such characters who spent their entire lives in one city. We come across a girl who is in love with the city and a guy who hates it. Their love is intertwined with an alternate world, legends of happiness lights and ghosts of comatose people .

Apart from that spark in our life wherein we wish to travel around the world and have our adventures, we continue that everlasting quest to attain satisfaction. But always there comes a time when you settle and then you think about your city, your surroundings. You look around and see the city changing. But…

Nothing can stay unchanged. Fun things… Happy things… They can’t possibly remain the same. Even so can you continue loving this city?”

I cant even begin to explain it’s vast variety of characters. A physically weak girl too sick to graduate, a guy with an alcoholic father, a ghost who wants everyone to attend her sister’s wedding, a drug addicted singer turned electrician, an actor who became a baker, a girl alone with a robotic doll in a world where no one else exists and much more.

Wanna hear some life truths?

If you get all worked up yourself, you’ll always get someone who’ll rebel. Being too eager brings negative results.”

Time and titles do not matter in the bonds between people

“If you feel like crying you should not hold back your tears. You should let it all out while you still can – because when you get bigger sometimes you can’t cry even if you have something to cry about.

“Those who seek out the truth must not be arrogant. You must not laugh at miracles just because they cannot be explained scientifically. You must not turn away from the beauty of this world.

Tomoya Okazaki, the main character, is a delinquent yet surprisingly determined to help everyone as long as it passes his time. It starts with his high school life and ends with his having a complete family.

If a prediction is right, then it’s like you only have one future. Like that future has been decided. But if it’s wrong, then you have an almost infinite number of possibilities. And that means that even the tiniest twist of fate can change your future. I want to believe that I have choices – that the path I walk has many different turns, and many different roads to follow

If the results come true, it’s as if there’s only one future. If it fails, we can think that other futures exist… I want to believe that in our future there are many possibilities waiting.

It was lovely and an exhilarating watch. The characters are beautiful and background scores are deep. With some light hearted comedy and emotionally charged scenes it is diligently designed by Key. And not to forget, the catchy song..
